What to Look for When Buying a Used Car

What to Look for When Buying a Used Car

Buying a used car can be an exciting step – but it can also feel overwhelming if you’re not sure where to start. At Moffatt’s Mazda, we’re committed to helping drivers make confident, informed decisions. With expert guidance, transparent advice, and a trusted selection of quality pre-owned vehicles, our team ensures you know exactly what to look for when buying a used car.

Whether you’re comparing models, inspecting a vehicle, or trying to understand what’s normal wear versus a red flag, this guide will walk you through the essentials so you can shop with peace of mind. Here’s what really matters when choosing a reliable used vehicle.

1. Exterior Inspection – First Impressions Matter

Start with the basics: take a walk around the vehicle and view it from multiple angles. It’s important to look for paint, rust damage, or any flaws in the frame and ensure it’s level.

  • Paint & Body Condition: Mismatched paint, uneven panels or overspray may signal previous bodywork or accident damage.
  • Rust: Pay attention especially along wheel arches, door edges, under the car and around hinges. Surface rust might be manageable, but structural rust is a serious issue.
  • Alignment & Level: The car should sit evenly; sagging on one side can be a sign of suspension trouble or past damage.
  • Tires & Wheels: Uneven tire wear may indicate alignment issues, suspension damage or neglected maintenance.
  • Glass & Lights: Look for cracks, chips or foggy lenses and ensure all lights appear to function and have no signs of water ingress.

2. Mileage

In Canada, vehicles typically accumulate about 20,000 km per year. To understand a car’s usage, divide its current mileage by its age in years to find the average annual mileage. If the number is significantly higher than average, it may indicate increased wear and tear.

3. Interior & Comfort – Life On the Road

Once inside, you can assess how the previous owner treated the vehicle, and whether the car will serve you well going forward:

  • Seat & Upholstery Condition: Excessive wear (especially in the driver’s area), tears, stains, or odours (smoke, mildew) can be clues to previous heavy use or neglect.
  • Dashboard & Electronics: When the car starts, warning lights should illuminate briefly and then go off; if lights stay on, that’s a red flag. Ensure power windows, locks, A/C, infotainment and other electronics operate properly.
  • Comfort Features: Check the air-conditioning, heat, seat adjustment, mirrors, sunroof (if applicable) work smoothly.

A clean, well-maintained interior often correlates with good overall care.

4. Under the Hood – A Closer Look

Though you may not be a mechanic, many basic checks are within your reach:

  • Fluids & Leaks: Look for oil, coolant or transmission fluid leaks. Dark or burnt smells from oils are troubling.
  • Corrosion, dirt and wear: A very dirty engine bay or heavy corrosion might point to poor maintenance or harsh previous use.
  • Cold Start Behaviour: It’s important to ask to start when cold. Rough idling, hesitation, or unusual noises signal potential problems.

5. Test Drive – How the Car Moves

Nothing replaces a proper test drive. Spend at least 15-20 minutes, covering city streets, highways if possible and rougher surfaces.

Here’s what to pay attention to:

  • Steering & Handling: It should feel smooth, responsive, without undue play or pulling to one side.
  • Braking: Check for firm, no squealing or grinding, no pulling left or right.
  • Acceleration & Transmission: No hesitation, jerks or sudden shifts. For manual, the clutch should engage.
  • Suspension & Noise: Listen for clunks, rattles, humming sounds – these often hide suspension or drivetrain issues.

If the car doesn’t drive confidently, it’s worth walking away.

6. Vehicle History & Maintenance Records

One of the strongest indicators of future reliability is the past care the vehicle received. If possible, check the vehicle identification number (VIN) using a service like CarFax to get a clear picture of the car’s history. A report will show past accidents, ownership details, and any recalls associated with that model. At Moffatt’s Mazda, you’ll receive a complimentary CarFax report with any of our vehicles, giving you added confidence in your purchase.
